Mach 1 Club and Internet Team

Barbie McSean

Current Residence:

Luton, Bedfordshire

Age:

33 years

Place of birth:

Sutton, Surrey

Marital Status:

Engaged to be married (just - congratulations!)

Career:

I had a very musical education and trained to be a primary school teacher. However, I had a change of heart at the last minute and became a law librarian instead over 10 years ago.

How did you get involved in the project?

I went to an early road show in March 1995 at Brooklands and joined the Mach 1 Club as an ordinary member. I upgraded to Gold immediately - I wanted to see the car run! I went to everything, signed everything and pestered Robin Richardson and John Lovatt to let me become involved which I finally did earlier this year. I was awarded Platinum membership earlier this year as well - a great honour.

Responsibilities in the UK:

I am currently working with the rest of the Internet Team to produce this fabulous site you're looking at. I also help out with anything that needs doing.

Responsibilities in Jordan:

I wasn't able to go as I was trying to move house at the time.

Responsibilities in the US:

These will probably involve working with the Internet Team.

Previous crazy ventures:

Driving for 24 hours non-stop following the route of the 1933 London-Edinburgh trial in a Caterham Super 7 through sun, heavy rain, sleet, snow and hail without the roof up! Sprinting my MGB GT, singing on stage at the "Last Night of the Proms" and getting an NVQ in bricklaying.

Car/Motorbike:

MGB GT V8, Yamaha Virago 535cc and Vauxhall Corsa Sport 1.4 (but not if I can help it!).

Favourite Music:

I think I'm quite broad-minded - I'm classically trained so love orchestral and choral.

What sort of books would you read if you had the time?

I enjoy reading fantasy and sci-fi, although I'm currently reading the Lonely Planet Guide to California and Nevada.

Hobbies:

When I have time they include touring with the V8, motorcycling, sprinting and gardening.

What do you want to do when the project is over?

Have a rest, keep in touch with the team and find something else like this to occupy my spare time!

What have you learned from this experience?

I've learnt how to fit 30 hours into every 24; how to be an individual within the team; when to say "no" (difficult when it's Richard Noble); and most importantly, the ability to say to the Great Nephews and Nieces - "Auntie Barbie was there!" - to be part of history.
