No oil company or sponsor in history has made a stronger or more successful commitment to the Land Speed Record than Castrol, whose drivers and cars have been at the forefront of record breaking competition for more than 75 years.

Through the remarkable efforts of Richard Noble OBE and his Rolls-Royce Avon jet-powered Thrust 2, Castrol still holds the record today, thanks to Noble's triumphant 633.468 mph (1019.44 kph) set on the Black Rock Desert in Nevada on October 4th, 1983.

But for a timely offer of help from Castrol at a crucial stage of its development, Richard Noble's Thrust SSC project to break the sound barrier on land might well have remained on the drawing board.

In record breaking, as in any highly technical endeavour, intensive research, planning and design are fundamental elements, but luck also plays a key role. Fortunately, you can make your own. Noble did back in the days of his successful attack on the land speed record with Thrust 2, when he forged an enduring alliance with the world-renowned oil company, and the strength of that relationship paid off in an unexpected manner just as planning for Thrust SSC had reached an impasse.

A chance remark at a Castrol Conference after a presentation on Thrust 2 by Noble ensured important funding for the new Thrust SSC project.

The Land Speed Record has officially been broken thirty six times, and on nineteen of those occasions Castrol has supplied the lubricants. Castrol holds the current record with Thrust 2, and for the past eighteen months has funded the intensive aerodynamic research study that has enabled Thrust SSC to progress from drawing board to construction stage. In financial and technical partnership with Thrust SSC, Castrol keeps the faith with its illustrious heritage while looking firmly to an exciting and demanding future as it builds further on an unsurpassed reputation for initiative and courage in pushing back the frontiers of technology.
